John H. Merrick (1859-1919): Sampson Slave Became an Industrialist
On September 7, 1859 John H. Merrick was born a slave in Clinton and raised by a single mother. He received no formal schooling, but learned to read and write in a Reconstruction school. By hard work and simple faith, Merrick rose in the world to organize the largest insurance company owned an operated entirely by African-Americans. Perhaps his personality, which was his greatest asset, accounted for the success he attained in life. He seemed to possess a charm that easily won people over.
When Merrick was twelve, he and his family relocated to Chapel Hill where he got a job in a brickyard providing support for his family. At the age of eighteen, Merrick moved to Raleigh where he became a brick mason and worked on the construction of Shaw University.

"George Henry White: tribute to a great American"
Correspondent
Dana Stone
TARBORO — Why isn’t George Henry White a household name? If Vincent Spalding has anything to do with it, that will soon change.
Long ignored in African American history books and recognitions, George Henry White of North Carolina was elected to Congress in 1896, and re-elected in 1898, becoming the last African American elected to Congress after Reconstruction, and the first to serve in the 20th century.

Press and Community Release
FARMERS UNION TAKES ACTION IN SUPPORT OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
State Representatives’ Betrayal Triggers Citizen Backlash
The recent cuts by the North Carolina General Assembly to the state’s Medicaid program—resulting in an overall loss of $1 billion in health care support to the poorest citizens—have aroused the ire of Bladen and Columbus County voters. Now, the Farmers Union Civic Association (FUCA) has established a watchdog group to monitor and publicize the actions of elected officials, and to focus legislators’ attention on the crucial needs of the populace.
“It is a travesty that the two state representatives for Bladen and Columbus Counties voted against their counties best interests, against their party, and against the governor’s veto, to cut desperately needed medical funding,” noted guest speaker Vincent Spaulding, President/COO of the Benjamin and Edith Spaulding Descendants Association, (BESDA) Inc., which is an organization consisting of descendants from Columbus and Bladen Counties who live all across the United States of America. “My outrage is due to the fact that Columbus County has the highest rate of prostate cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes in the nation—and that most county residents have no health insurance or access to health care.”
Spaulding told the 65 attendees at the FUCA community meeting, held August 15 at the Rehobeth AME Zion Church, that according to the University of Wisconsin/Robert Ford Johnson Foundation (www.countyhealthrankings.org) Columbus County ranked dead last in health care in the state, and Bladen County was fourth from the bottom. “Yet State Representative Dewey Hill for Columbus County, and State Representative William Brisson for Bladen County, voted to cut funding for health care, depriving their own constituents--who are already drastically under-served.” He pointed out that they also cut funds to the state's education budget; "Local schools need these funds to create an educational environment that will encourage community youth to stay in school and come out qualified for some type of work."
Spaulding’s address underlined concerns expressed by many community members and encouraged the community to start organizing for this cause. Improving the quality and delivery of public services throughout the extended community (including every population group and both counties) requires finding common ground and consensus, noted Spaulding. "No one group can do it; we need a way to resolve disagreements and keep our focus on the needs and interests of the community."
Association President, Margaret Freeman Gordon, who initiated the proceedings, was on hand to lead the ensuing discussion, which in turn led to the formation of a permanent Legislative Committee. The aim of the committee is four-fold:
-
to seek out all affected community partners and sister organizations,
-
to jointly identify the pressing community needs,
-
to investigate and rate the voting records of current officials, and
-
to provide a forum where those officials can respond to their constituents’ concerns.
“Our ancestors took control of their own destiny,” Spaulding noted. “They built their own schools, started their own businesses, and were self-reliant and self-sufficient.”
“We need to take back the control in our governance,” he said. “If elected officials aren’t representing our concerns, they can be un-elected. And we need to find ones who will work with us to find solutions.”
Appointed to the FUCA Legislative Committee were Rev. Valenteen Sutton, Mr. Clarence Spaulding, Ms. Paula Jacobs (a member of Waccamaw Siouan Tribe and of the St. James Community), Rev. Franklin Spaulding and Mr. Wilson Spaulding (Chairperson). The first order of business is to encourage other civic organizations to establish similar committees, and to invite all residents of both counties to communicate their concerns directly to the committee.
Residents of Columbus and Bladen counties are welcome to express their opinions directly to the committee members Chaired by Wilson Spaulding, (910) 647-4831 or e-mail at wespau@hughes.net.
“The Benjamin and Edith Spaulding Association, Inc., Board of Directors, have voted to offer assistance in terms of research, technical expertise, organizational support, raising awareness and national attention to the issues faced by these two counties,” Spaulding advised. “We know that the people of these counties are strong and independent, have a history of strong Christian values, and recognize the importance of education; and it’s time they get the community services and representation they deserve.”
Spaulding closed by saying the goal of community organizing is to not only have a seat at the table, but to actually influence the policies and decisions that directly make an impact on one's life. He challenged the meeting attendees to unite for the common good and to become proactive in the pursuit of what is needed for the community.

Greetings, Benjamin and Edith Spaulding Descendants,
This is to encourage donations to sustain the BESDA, Inc. Scholarship Fund. Since 2006, our family has provided scholarships to deserving, qualified high school seniors who have been accepted into institutions of higher learning. To date, we have provided 18 college students with scholarships totaling over $36,000. Your contribution will not be tax deductible, as all scholarships under the family association are for family members only.
Our goal is to raise at least $8,000, the minimum amount required to maintain the program at its current level: awarding 6 $2,000 scholarships at every bi-annual reunion. We will reach our goal if every family member makes a contribution of at least $10, $20, $25, or higher. To perpetuate this program long term, donation of $100 or higher will go a long way towards making this program available for young adults will into the future.
Make your check or money order to payable to BESDA, Inc. and mail to Dallas Smith, CFO/Treasurer at 1009 Pleasance Grove, Peachtree City, Georgia 30269. Or you can access the family website at www.spauldingfamily.com and contribute online through Pay Pal with a credit card. Harvard University Announcement
No tuition and no student loans
Harvard University announced over the weekend that
from now on undergraduate students from low-income families
will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's

ten percent of the students in elite higher education

we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in
bringing elite higher education to the lower half of
the income distribution."
If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a
year with an honor student graduating from high school
soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The
prestigious university recently announced that from
now on undergraduate students from low-income families
can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student

Hello Cousins,
After 8 years of research, it is with great excitement that I am announcing the launch of the Campbell Web site. This web site documents the descendants of Samuel Campbell and Euphemia. I have only posted the first 4 generations (the foundation). As you know the Campbell and Spaulding families have been connected for well over a hundred years. I am hoping that all of you visit the web site. I would love to have your feedback. I will be updating the web site on a regular base as additional information becomes available.
There will be a follow up book in hard copy scheduled for a 2008 - 2009 release. This book will include up to 8 generations as well as Old photos. If you see that your ancestors are listed on the web site, I invite you to contact me to confirm my information is accurate and also I need your help in providing additional information on subsequent generations 4 thru 8. My thanks go out to my entire fellow researcher for their contributions.
Blessing to ALL,
Your cousin,

Tiffany’s thesis examined changes to financial aid, enrollment and tuition and analyzed their effects on seniors at Penn State’s University Park campus.
While she graduated in December, Tiffany isn’t quite ready to bring her Penn State experience to an end. With the start of the spring semester, Tiffany is enrolled as a graduate student studying higher education administration. She hopes to apply her financial know-how to help make college more accessible to low-income students.

Dean Wins Valley of the Sun Bowl
December 3, 2011
Kenneth Hansen-Smith
Glendale, AZ…The Dean College (Franklin, MA) football team capped a tremendous fall season by capturing the Valley of the Sun Bowl in dramatic fashion over Glendale Community College. Trailing 25-6 late in the third quarter, the Bulldogs scored 20 straight points to capture its first bowl crown in four tries, 26-25. It was a measure of revenge over the Gauchos, as Dean had fallen to them two years ago in the same bowl game, 10-9.
Our student athletes and coaching staff have worked extremely hard to obtain this honor as it is the fourth football bowl offer in Dean’s history. This speaks to the institution’s commitment to our student athletes and to the talented coaches who support and encourage their play on the field and in the classroom.
Ken is the son of Marc and Jessica Smith and the grandson of Dallas and Shirley Smith.

It's 101 for Mrs. Daniels, May, 2005
by Marian Crumdy | The Wilmington Journal
Family and friends from many parts of the country gathered at Town Hall, April 16, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. to celebrate the 101st birthday of Mrs. Gertrude Mitchell Daniels.
On April 13, 1804, God gave Rev. Schofield and Suzie Mitchell the gift of a baby, Gertrude. She was the twelfth of thirteen children. Her father was a farmer and a preacher, pastoring part-time at what is currently St. Andrew AME Zion Church.
Gertrude attended school in Freeman, North Carolina. She continued her education in Wilmington and upon graduating, enrolled in Teacher’s Summer School, Vineland, North Carolina and received a teaching certificate.
She taught in Bladen County at East Arcadia. Gertrude met John Daniels and became his bride in 1925. After moving to Wilmington, they both joined St. Andrew AME Zion Church. John and Gertrude provided a loving home for daughter Alma and granddaughter Jacqui.Twenty-seven years later, they were blessed with another daughter, Johnsie. Gertrude discovered her talent for arranging flowers and opened Daniels Flower Shop. She impacted the lives of the community and businesses through her flowers. She donated altar flowers at church every first Sunday in remembrance of John Daniels until she retired. Not only a talented florist, she was also a talented seamstress. After 26 years in the floral business, she retired at the age of 90. She is the last living child of Schofield and Suzie Mitchell. She remains a member of St. Andrew AME Zion Church.
Greetings were given by Mrs. Amelia Bridges with prayer by Rev. Aaron Moore. Salutations were given from St. Andrew AME Zion Church by Mrs. Barbara Richburg, City of Wilmington by Mrs. Sheryl Payne, the floral industry by Mr. Lawrence Epps and funeral industry by Mrs. Allene Drain.
During dinner, a slide presentation designed by Mr. and Mrs. Windell Butler was presented. Mrs. Posey Johnson recited a poem called “Ode to a Centenarian” which she wrote in honor of Mrs. Daniels.
Salutations on behalf of the family were given by Tamika Davis Bierlein, granddaughter, and remarks were ade by daughter Jacqui Brown and Johnsie Davis.
The family of Mrs. Daniels would like to thank all who assisted with catering, hosting, and planning as well as everyone who was present to celebrate 101 years of a life filled with love, joy and happiness.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GERTRUDE!!

Carolyn L. Hobson
Tribute
On behalf of the members of the Benjamin & Edith Spaulding Descendants Association (BESDA), Inc, National Board of Directors, the members of the DC Metro Region of BESDA, Inc., and family members Carrie Phifer Thompson and Helena Sammons- Slade who prepared the “Family Resolution of Sorrow and Respect”, I would like to extend our heartfelt sadness at the passing of our beloved cousin, family member, and friend, Carolyn L. Hobson. Carolyn was a dedicated and hard worker for our family, which she loved very much. Looking back over the past 24 years of family activities and initiatives, Carolyn was always in the forefront in moving the business of the family along and used her God given talents as a graphic artist to capture the essence of who we are as a family in her artwork. Her artistic talents were utilized by serving as the official family artist for the Benjamin and Edith Spaulding Descendants Association from 1988 until 2009 when she was not able to continue due to failing health. Her most profound contributions to the history and legacy of our family include:
-
Creating the family crest, which can be seen on this tribute and on booklets, tee shirts, and family stationary. She also created a myriad of beautiful art work displayed on family souvenirs and professional publications, some of which is still on display today.
-
Creating the artwork on display for the family website and facilitating the contract and development of the family’s first website, posted nationally during 2001.
-
Creating the large banners used at family banquets, the permanent signs for the registration desk, the Ancestral National Memorial Display at the 2008 Washington, DC Reunion, and using her artwork for various family ads and announcements.
-
Preparing standard operating procedures for the use and display of the family crest and family artwork.
-
During the 2010 family reunion Carolyn received the BESDA Family Spirit Award for volunteering her talents to the family for the betterment of the family organization.
Even though Carolyn’s time with us has been shortened, her work in support of our family needs and interest will live on. Beautiful memories of her will remain with all of us who had the good fortune to have known, worked or interfaced with her. In closing, may her son Corey, the “pride of her life”, her siblings and immediate family members, and all of us in her extended family, find comfort in the many special remembrances of the one we love so much.
Sincerely, Vincent M. Spaulding

Dear Family Members,
It is with sadness that we inform you of the passing of Freda Spaulding on Wednesday evening, March 30th, in Indio, California. Freda was the wife of Bernard Spaulding, and together they co-hosted the 1994 family reunion in Los Angeles. She leaves behind to mourn her loss her husband, Bernard, and 4 children: Aaron, Kimberly, Greg, and Scott.

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this period of great lost. Cousin Albert was an inspiration to many of us in the Spaulding family. He and his wife Virginia lived what they believed and many times reached into the family to bring cousins into the ARS business to learn first hand the message of entrepreneurship. We will miss him dearly.

Cousin Al had keen intelligence, wisdom, and insight. His counseling and direction helped me through personal, family, and business challenges; I am a better person and businessman for it. Al said to deal with life "as it is" while striving to make it the way "you" want you it to be. Working for him was an honor. Al's impact will be missed indeed but lives on through everyone each touched. |

I'll always treasure the fond memories of the 16 years that I worked for him.

I hope someone can identify the two Welches Creek family's. 1880's-1900's. They were living on the John Richard Baldwin/Hampton farm. The Joshua Blanks family was living next door and could be the photo of the large family of 12. The first photo is of my Great Uncle Dr. Oscar Brent Baldwin (1877) son of Martha and Fran Baldwin (1838) of Welches Creek Township. I don't have a guess of who the other family is. Thanks!Shelda Baldwin Glover
